Paradise Birds
Paradise Birds is a cherished design that lends a luxurious ambience to every interior. Inspired by 18th century China, this hand-painted watercolour pattern is a safe bet if you’re looking for an airy, dreamy, exclusive wallpaper.
Paradise Birds is a truly exclusive wallpaper with a hand-painted pattern consisting of birds and blossoming branches. The pattern was created in 2018 by Sissa Sundling, Head of Design at Boråstapeter, who was inspired by 18th century Chinoiserie-style murals. It is printed on a lustrous silk-like background, which gives the wallpaper a luxe feel and amazing depth. A wonderful, romantic wallpaper for interiors that call for that touch of whimsy and glamour.
In the 1700s, Chinese design became all the rage after China opened its borders to trade and a wealth of Chinese arts and crafts reached Europe. The East India Company’s trade was booming. Sailing back and forth to China, the ships brought home treasures like ceramics, tea, spices and silks. The Chinese style was imitated in Europe, and gained popularity in the form of interior murals, for example. To this day, two centuries later, Chinoiserie remains a classic style that blends beautifully with contemporary interiors.

Traditionally, wallpapers in this style were painted straight on walls, but Sissa wanted to create a conventional, 10-metre roll wallpaper. She used watercolours, and painted a couple of birds-of-paradise, camellia blooms and cherry blossom sprigs. Among elegant branches, flowers and birds are scattered at random to bring out the light and airy look. Her design was then printed on a lustrous background to further enhance the dream-like effect.
“This wallpaper is ideal for a romantic bedroom or dressing room, or a dream of a deluxe bathroom. In the TV series Bridgerton (an extravagant costume drama set in the early 1800s), the set in one scene was decorated with the pink colourway of our Paradise Birds!”
